The houses at Veien
During
the recent excavations archaeologists have found postholes and hearths
from more houses. The biggest one, house I, is a hall-house, or
long-house, from the early Roman period. It is 47 meters long and the
biggest house found at Østlandet from this period of time. The other
houses are probably from a later period.
Other finds
During a 5-year period almost 20 flat graves were discovered. The dead
bodies were burnt and the cremated bones probably wrapped in pieces of
cloth or buried in vessels. Some of them have simple grave goods like
pieces of pottery. One grave is from early Bronze Age (900 BC), the
others from the late Iron Age. Many cooking pits have also been found;
they prove activities in this field from 1000BC to AD 1300.
In the mounds and elsewhere in this area slag has been found. In the
wood there are pits for charcoal. Perhaps a blacksmith worked here
making tools and weapons. The iron was of great value both as an object
of exchange and a symbol of high rank.
